This is a time to eliminate college choices as much as it is to explore new options. Visit different types of colleges and universities and listen for differences in how they present themselves. For instance, what’s the difference between a small liberal arts college and a mid-sized university in terms of the education, curriculum and experience?
Think outside the box. There are incredible colleges where you will receive an outstanding education, excellent acceptance rates to graduate schools, internships and solid experience. Many of these colleges are lesser known outside of academic circles and their booths will not be crowded. Some of my favorites on the list that may be less crowded include: Carroll College, Connecticut College, Cornell College, Ithaca College, Kalamazoo, Macalester, Montana State, Knox College, and many, many more…..
Everyone wants to go to the West Coast or the East Coast. Dare to be different! Think how much the mid-west or southern states might love to have a student from Seattle!
Come prepared to ask questions. Admissions reps love it when you ask questions and will take note! Here are just a few questions you may want to ask:
Tell me about the culture of your school?
What are five words that best describe your school?
Describe the work/life balance at your school?
What are some of the strongest departments? What makes them strong?
What changes are happening at your school right now and in the near future?
Tell me about the experiential opportunities/learning outside the classroom: internships, co-ops, community service.
Tell me about the career services?
What are the most popular clubs and activities?
Describe the social scene? How do students spend their weekends?
When you give admissions representatives your email address, make sure it is not too cute or lacking in maturity (i.e shortandsassy@gmail.com does not work!).
